Crumbles have been popular in British cuisine for centuries and are an excellent alternative to pies, especially as the crumble mixture is more simple to make and although they are mostly thought of as a dessert, they can also be made with savoury fillings where the sugar in the crumble is replaced with other ingredients such as cheese.

 

There have been lots of adaptations and additions made to the recipe over the years including the addition of oats and nuts to the crumble mixture, baking it in a tart form and making individual portion crumbles. However, the original for a apple crumble like mother used to make remains a firm favourite -  just wonderful sweetened apples with the traditional fine buttery crumble.
