Split Pea Soup

This video shows you how to make  a thick warming soup using green or yellow split peas.

A very easy to cook and economical recipe which can be adapted to vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions.

Use whatever leftover meat you have to hand - however little -  which adds to the flavour.

Split Pea Soup Recipe

Serves 2



1-2 tbsp Olive Oil

1 Medium Onion, chopped

1 Garlic Clove, crushed

75g/3oz Green or yellow Split Peas, soaked overnight in plenty of cold water

600ml/20fl.oz. Strong Stock

Salt and Black Pepper

1 Bouquet Garni (made up of herbs such as Thyme, a Bay Leaf and Parsley)

Optional Leftover meat from a joint such as beef, lamb, chicken or ham




1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan, add the onion and sauté over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until just beginning to soften and take on colour.


2. Add the garlic, and sauté stirring for about 1 minute then add the split peas, stock, herbs, salt and black pepper, mix well and bring to the boil.


3. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes until the peas are very soft.


4. Remove from the heat and either using a hand blender process in the saucepan until smooth or allow to cool a little then transfer to a liquidiser and blend until smooth. If necessary, reheat before serving.


Sprinkle with a little fresh parsley and serve hot with crusty bread or croutons.
