Below are general guidelines for growing land cress, a good substitute for watercress, including plant height to enable you to plan exactly where to place them when growing amongst other plants.

Up to 22.5cm/9"

Time between sowing and harvesting

8 weeks

Where to Sow

Outdoors in open ground or in containers

Sowing time

March to May or September for over-wintering - temperature   +10C/50F. 

How to Sow

12mm/1/2-inch deep - very thinly -  in rows 30cm/12" apart or in groups/blocks or in containers. .

After Germination

Thin out to 10cm (4in) apart and keep weed free.

Growing on - 

in Pots

Thin the seedlings to 8in (20cm) spacings when they are large enough to handle.  Protect from slugs. Keep the soil moist but not wet.

Growing on -

in open ground

As above


Keep the soil very moist with regular watering, preferably before mid afternoon. Continue to protect from slugs. Remove flower stalks as they appear


Pick the outer leaves from young plants this will encourage more growth. Pick the heart leaves from older plants. Very hardy - covered with cloches to provide pickings through the winter.
