Chocolate Cake Recipe


Veg CD CBF 45mins

Makes 1 x 20cm/8 inch cake     Cold  Vegetarian  Cakes  Baked Fayre teatime



100g/4oz Good quality Plain Chocolate, grated

5 Eggs, separated

225g/8oz Caster Sugar

100g/4oz Butter

100g/4oz Plain Flour



1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas mark 4 and grease a 20cm/8inch cake tin.

2. In a bowl, beat together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and thick.


3. Add the butter and chocolate and beat well.


4. Gradually add the flour beating after each addition, then fold in the beaten egg whites.

5. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 30 minutes.


The cake will be cooked when a toothpick is inserted into the middle and comes out clean. Turn onto a wire rack to cool.

Bake - To cook in an enclosed oven

Beat To introduce air into a mixture using a utensil such as a wooden spoon, fork or whisk, in order to achieve a lighter texture.

Cream - to - The process where sugar and softened butter are beaten together with a wooden spoon, until the mixture is light, pale and well blended. This process may also be carried out with a hand held mixer or in a food processor.

Fold in  - To gently combine lighter mixtures with heavier ones usually using a metal spoon or spatula in a cutting or slicing J movement whilst slightly lifting the utensil.
