Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas Mark 6 and lightly flour a baking tray.
Place the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt,
and currants in a large bowl
and mix well.
Add the buttermilk, mix well then
knead the dough in the bowl for a couple of minutes.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and shape
into an 20cm/8-inch round.
Transfer to the baking tray, cut a cross into top with a
sharp knife and bake for 40 minutes,
until golden brown and sounds a
hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.
